History

Yampa Fire Protection District was founded in 1949 as the Yampa Volunteer Fire Department. The fire protection district was formed in 1982 when the Yampa Volunteer Fire Department and the South Routt County Ambulance merged together.  Over the course of these many decades, Yampa Fire Protection District has proudly served our community and visistors alike.  We are the only all-volunteer fire district in Routt County and we cover the largest area of the county with much of or district being nonresidential areas.

Since the creation of the district, the population has grown considerably.  We now serve a population of 942 fulltime residents, covering an area of 389 square miles within Routt County.  We have mutual aid agreements with Rio Blanco and Garfield counties and provide initial response for incidents in their counties that are only accessible from our district.
